FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHY SHOULD MY SCHOOL ENTER THE EV CHALLENGE POWERED BY SYNERGY?
The eV Challenge powered by Synergy is one of WA's, and Australia's, premier STEM competitions. As you're probably aware STEM education is very high on the educational agenda so the relevance of the eV Challenge to modern education is very high. However the eV Challenge was created way back in 2001, and was STEM before even STEM was STEM - if you get my point.

The benefits of entering the event are many and varied - it allows schools to provide students with a stimulating STEM project to focus on (who doesn't like race cars?); the large-scale nature of the project lends itself to exposing students to a large team-based project - just like engineering projects out in the real world; the vehicles built to compete are designed to fit actual people in - no tiny models here. It means that students actually get to drive their creations; the event is safe and stimulating. We are a CAMS affiliated club, use affiliated and accredited officials and venues, our technical regulations are approved by CAMS, we are insured by CAMS also, and our regulations allow for safe vehicles which also have the capability of being fast enough to make the event fun.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ENTER A TEAM?
Good question! The eV Challenge powered by Synergy includes a budget limit for school teams in Classes A & B. This limit of $1,200 does NOT include the cost of the battery, safety gear such as mirrors, a horn, or seatbelts, or items to make the car look attractive like paint or signage.

A Class A battery will set you back around $450 while a Class B/C battery (they use the same) is closer to $700. While they seem a bit pricey, well maintained batteries will last a number of years.

So overall, if you were to spend a full $1,200 on your vehicle's items which are included in the budget limit, and entered in a class with the more expensive battery, you would be looking at between $2000-2500.

However - the big bonus is the reusable nature of many of the components in an eV Challenge vehicle. Wheels, brakes, motor, as well as those items listed earlier, can be re-used into another vehicle in the future - massively reducing your costs.

Event entry costs average at $180 per vehicle. Over half of that is the cost of three CAMS Level 2 Non-Speed Junior licences for your three drivers - assuming they are under 18.
WHEN IS THE 2018 EVENT BEING HELD?
